July 13/14
The day before we left our lakeside oasis at Otter Creek, as is my custom, I scrutinized my Benchmark Atlas to get a sense of the next stop.
I have one of these for each of the states we plan to visit. They are great resources, as they focus on public lands and recreation areas. Planning to drive about two hours, I looked at an area about 10 miles north east of Provo Utah, about 5 miles off the main road, but on a paved road the whole way. I also typically consult the internet for any hints about our destination or the route to be taken. Because we were off the grid, I skipped that step this time. It all looked easy-peasy, I thought.
This was the first time we traveled on an interstate since leaving I-17 at Flagstaff. Oh man – the speed limit is 80 here! Not us. We trundle along about 65, which is the max I am comfortable driving the camper van.
All was well as we turned off Interstate 15 at Provo, and headed north east. All was still well as we turned onto the road toward the campground, Mt. Timpanagos. However, what I had failed to discover in my research is that the campground is at an elevation of 7,600 feet. Provo is at 4,500 feet. That’s an elevation gain of more than 3,000 feet in just a few miles. Needless to say, we had to take it very slowly, and my transmission was thankful when we reached the spot. My self-talk was stern…”Self, we’re in the Mountain West. Details like elevation gain are important. Lesson learned”.
A campground in the forest, on a stream, with three bars of Internet. For $11 a night. Can’t get better. At least until we have to go back DOWN the mountain. Without giving away the details, just know that we made it.
Thanks for following along.
Sounds like an awesome adventure, Eileen!
Happy trails to you, Sally, and Trax!
Thanks, Phil. It will be interesting, I am certain of that :-)
Hi Eileen,
As I am just learning about your adventure, my curiosity is getting the better of me. Of course, feel free to tell me to be patient if you have already planned to sprinkle this information throughout your blogs. 😉 I’ll keep my questions to a minimum, I promise. So, just this one: do you have a plan for your travels, or are you letting your wonderlust carry you forward?
Irma, I do have an outline of a plan. But except for a couple specific dates, my daily/weekly travels are pretty flexible.
Glad you got up and down safely! Those hills can be scary, for sure. Our plan is always to begin the downhill at the speed we want to be at all the way diwn, so we aren’t trying to slow down on the descent.
Can’t wait to see you next week :)
Yes, it will be fun!
VERY thankful you made it up and back down safely…also thankful you are taking it slow and easy…not 80MPH…enjoy reading about your adventures
Sounds like you need a USGS topo map that indicates stuff like elevations… not that you want to spend a fortune on expensive maps!
Eileen, I am so happy for you making this trip. If you find yourself near the Seattle/Issaquah area, I would really enjoy getting a chance to meet up with you and meet Sally and Trax. In the meantime, I have saved the link to your blog and plan to follow your journey. Take care and i hope you enjoy every minute of this great journey.
Whew!! Looks pretty there and worth the climb!
Eileen,
Love the blog – beautiful pictures! Pictures of the pups please – miss their furry faces!
Looks like everything is going wonderfully – enjoy, enjoy!
I will be sure to put a few more pictures in the next post !
Cool weather sounds so nice right now! Your trip sounds fabulous. How are my furry friends enjoying? Wow for them— all the new smells along the way. Safe travels and enjoy. I went to San Diego for a few nights to see Andi. She is doing much better than I expected. Now I can leave for Europe with an easy mind. Hugs to all of you.

Thanks for the encouragement, Sophie. I just added a couple more. I didn’t have internet adequate to work on them the past couple days.
